BOOK NOW Really helping with my lower back pain. Anna P. Excellent staff and great care given at every visit! Billy P. Very nice and professional! Brayden H. I have been seeing Dr. Spencer for year or so and have been getting decompression treatments as well. Just finished my decompression package and fell so much better. The decompression treatments have helped me start living life again. I ran my first half marathon, competed in my first bike race and so much more. I didn't realize how much discomfort I was in until I was getting treatment. I now go in monthly for my adjustment and every other month for my maintenance decompression session. Couldn't recommend Dr. Spencer and his team enough. Angela D. After being involved in a car accident I needed some chiropractic care so I stopped in to the wellness center and we got started on my injuries healing them and found out that I had some other needs that needed to be taken care of as well. I have been using the decompression table to help with my spine injury and I can tell you that it makes a huge difference and I would not have known what my issue was because I'm not a person that goes to the doctor very often and I feel so much better just in the short time that I have been coming here Linda Z. The Wellness Center is just about the best place you could take yourself and feel much better when you leave. I've primarily always seen Dr. Spencer, but Dr. Felton has seen me on occasion too. Although they have different styles in how they adjust both are fantastic with a good touch and confidence in their care, have always felt I was in good hands. I've also done twenty plus visits doing the Decompression Table treatments and although time consuming, it's helped my back pain reduction tremendously and scheduling and doing the visits was overall very worth it. Tess was my latest massage therapist and it went awesome. From the front desk greeting to the chiro or massage table, I've never been let down by The Wellness Center!! They've helped me a great deal and I'm extremely appreciative. Carley B.

Meet Your Chiropractor - Dr. Spencer Dr. Alec Spencer is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA. During his time at Palmer, he made the Dean’s list several times and was involved with different clubs and organizations within the school. He studied Medical Science and Chemistry from Western Illinois University, Macomb IL, as well as Biology at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. He knows several adjusting techniques including SOT, Flexion-distraction, and Palmer Package (Diversified, Gonstead, and Thompson). Dr. Spencer has won several awards and been recognized for his success with reducing patients’ pain. Dr. Spencer's Chiropractic Calling Chiropractic care has been a part of Dr. Spencer's life since childhood thanks to his uncle, who was a chiropractor. A snowboarding accident at 12 left him with a back injury, but a chiropractor helped him recover quickly. This experience sparked Dr. Spencer's passion for chiropractic, which focuses on the body's natural ability to heal itself when the nervous system functions optimally. As an athlete himself, Dr. Spencer understands the importance of proper body mechanics and alignment for peak performance and overall well-being. That's why he incorporates exercise rehabilitation into his practice. He uses a combination of adjustments, taping, and exercise programs to get you back to the activities you love, whether it's competitive sports or simply going about your daily life. Dr. Spencer's mission goes beyond just treating pain. He empowers patients by educating them about the human body, allowing them to make informed decisions about their health and understand how chiropractic care can be a vital part of their wellness journey. His ultimate goal? To see you living life to the fullest, brimming with health and vitality! A Life of Balance When Dr. Spencer isn't helping patients, he enjoys an active family life with his wife, Alex, and their three children. They love exploring the outdoors together, whether it's camping or sightseeing on road trips. A strong believer in physical fitness himself (having competed in MMA, boxing, and jiu-jitsu), Dr. Spencer encourages his patients to embrace an active lifestyle. Faith and Healing Dr. Spencer acknowledges his faith and believes in the power of prayer for healing. While his practice won't involve anointing patients with oil, he silently prays for their well-being throughout their chiropractic journey. Studies show that around one-third of adults report experiencing joint pain within a single month, with knee pain being the most common culprit, followed by shoulder and hip pain. Your chiropractor will work to diagnose the underlying cause of your pain and develop a personalized treatment plan to reduce pain, inflammation, and preserve joint function. Headaches: A Widespread and Disabling Condition Headaches are a common experience, causing pain or discomfort anywhere in your head, face, scalp, or neck. This pain can manifest in various ways, including a throbbing sensation, constant ache, sharp stabs, or dull pressure. Headaches can affect one or both sides of your head and may be concentrated in a specific area. Headaches are a common problem, affecting a significant portion of the global population. In fact, they rank as one of the top three most frequent neurological conditions across most age groups. Here's a closer look at the impact of headaches: Prevalence: An estimated 40% of the population, or 3.1 billion people worldwide, experience headaches in 2021. Women are more likely to be affected than men. Impact: Headaches not only cause pain but also significantly impact quality of life and contribute to disability. They are the third highest cause of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) globally. Economic Burden: Headaches cause substantial economic losses for individuals and society due to decreased work productivity and healthcare costs. Underdiagnosis and Treatment: Despite their prevalence, many people with headaches don't receive proper diagnosis and treatment. Types of Headaches There are various types of headaches , each with its own characteristics: Migraine: This is a primary headache disorder causing moderate to severe pain, often on one side of the head. It can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines can be triggered by various factors, including hormones and certain foods. Tension-Type Headaches: These headaches are described as pressure or tightness in the head or neck. They are often stress-related and can be episodic (occurring less than 15 days per month) or chronic (persistent). Cluster Headaches: These are less common but extremely severe headaches, occurring frequently (up to several times a day) and typically focused around one eye. They are more prevalent in men. Medication-Overuse Headaches: These headaches arise from the overuse of medication to treat other headaches, creating a cycle of dependence and worsening pain. Headaches are a prevalent issue, but with proper diagnosis and management, individuals can experience significant improvement in their quality of life. At Prairie Grove Chiropractic, we can develop a care plan to get your life back and remove headaches from everyday living! Neck Pain: A Widespread Issue with Significant Costs Neck pain is a common problem in modern society, affecting millions of people globally. While it may not be the most frequent musculoskeletal disorder, its impact is significant. The Economic Burden of Neck Pain: Healthcare Costs: Neck pain is a leading contributor to healthcare spending. In the US alone, neck pain and low back pain combined were responsible for the highest healthcare expenditures among 154 conditions in 2016, with an estimated cost of $134.5 billion. Global Prevalence: Studies show that neck pain is a widespread issue, with a global prevalence of approximately 3551.1 cases per 100,000 people in 2017. These statistics highlight the significant impact of neck pain on individuals and healthcare systems worldwide. Fortunately, there are a number of treatment options available for neck pain, allowing for a personalized approach to managing discomfort and regaining function. Manual Therapy or Techniques like massage therapy and chiropractic adjustments can sometimes help ease muscle tension and improve joint mobility in the neck. Early intervention is crucial for optimal treatment outcomes. A chiropractor at Prairie Grove Chiro and Message can assess your individual situation and recommend the most appropriate course of treatment to effectively manage your neck pain and promote long-term relief. Beyond the Ball and Socket: Why Shoulders Are Prone to Pain Shoulder pain is a frequent issue, affecting 18-26% of adults at any given time, making it a leading cause of regional pain. This pain can be persistent and significantly impact daily activities, both at home and work. The economic burden is also substantial, with increased healthcare costs, reduced work performance, and higher rates of absenteeism and job loss. Shoulder Complexity and Vulnerability Unlike a simple ball-and-socket joint, the shoulder is a complex structure with four interconnected joints and a network of muscles, ligaments, and bones inside and outside the joint capsule. This intricate design allows for a wide range of motion but also makes it susceptible to various injuries and conditions). Causes of Shoulder Pain Shoulder pain can originate from various sources: Local Shoulder Problems: These are issues within the shoulder joint itself. Neck Pain Referred to the Shoulder: Sometimes, pain originating in the neck can be felt in the shoulder, making diagnosis tricky. Referred Pain from Abdominal Organs: In rare cases, pain from organs in the abdomen, like the liver or diaphragm, can be misinterpreted as shoulder pain. Torn Annulus Arthritis Carpal Tunnel Degenerative Disc Disease Facet Arthrosis and Facet Joint Syndrome Muscle Strain or Sprain Nerve Compression Syndrome Neuropathy Pinched Nerve Sciatica Scoliosis Pain Slipped Disc, Herniated Disc, or Bulging disc Spinal Injuries Spinal Stenosis Spondylolisthesis TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome Vertigo Whiplash / Auto Accident Injury Workplace Injury The Anxious Annulus: Cracks and Tears in Your Spinal Cushion Your spine has discs between the vertebrae that act like shock absorbers. These discs have a tough outer shell called the annulus fibrosus . Sometimes, the annulus can develop cracks or tears, known as annular fissures. The good news is that many annular fissures don't cause any pain. You might have one and not even know it! However, some annular fissures can be uncomfortable. This pain can be caused by: Granulation tissue: This is scar tissue that forms around the tear. Nerve involvement: If nerves grow near the tear, they can become irritated and cause pain. Annular tears are tiny cracks or tears in the outer ring of your spinal discs. While they're common, they often go unnoticed. However, in some cases, they can develop into a more serious condition called a herniated disc. Herniated discs occur when the soft inner material of the disc pushes through the tear in the outer ring. This can irritate nearby nerves, leading to: Back pain Neck pain And potentially other symptoms depending on the location of the herniated disc Early Detection is Key: While not all annular tears progress to herniated discs, it's important to be aware of the potential consequences. If you experience persistent back or neck pain, it's wise to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment. Early intervention can help prevent further complications. We are experienced and certified in disc pain treatment. We can help with painful annulus tears! Facet Arthrosis: Understanding Back Pain in Older Adults Back pain is a common experience, especially as we age. Facet arthrosis is a condition that can cause significant discomfort in the lower back, particularly for older adults or those with previous back injuries. What are Facet Joints? Imagine your spine as a stack of blocks (vertebrae) connected by small joints called facets. These joints help keep your spine stable and allow for movement like twisting and bending. Facet joints have smooth cartilage and fluid-filled sacs for cushioning and lubrication. What Happens in Facet Arthrosis? Over time, wear-and-tear, injury, or conditions like arthritis can damage the cartilage in the facet joints. This can cause the bones to rub together, leading to pain and stiffness. Common Causes of Facet Arthrosis: Age : Cartilage naturally wears down with age. Injury: Back injuries or repetitive stress can damage the facet joints. Arthritis: Osteoarthritis can affect the facet joints like any other joint. Obesity: Excess weight puts extra strain on the spine, including the facet joints. Poor posture: Improper lifting techniques or bad posture can accelerate wear and tear. Symptoms to Watch For: Facet arthrosis pain often differs from other types of back pain. Here are some key signs: Lower back pain that worsens in the morning or with inactivity. Pain that increases with twisting or bending motions. Pain that typically stays in one location but may radiate elsewhere. Living with Facet Arthrosis: While facet arthrosis is a chronic condition, there are ways to manage it and improve your quality of life. Treatment options include: Potential Complications: Left untreated, facet arthrosis can worsen. This can lead to: Bone spurs: When bones rub together due to cartilage loss, they may develop bony growths (spurs). Joint enlargement: The affected facet joints and surrounding ligaments might become enlarged and cause discomfort. Remember: Don't ignore persistent back pain. Consult a healthcare professional for diagnosis and a personalized management plan to keep you active and pain-free. A Widespread Challenge: Arthritis and Joint Pain in Older Adults Arthritis and joint pain are prevalent issues among older adults, affecting millions. Arthritis is a term that describes inflammation of one or more joints, which are places where two or more bones meet. This condition can lead to reduced physical activity, increased disability, and even sleep problems, depression, anxiety, and falls. A National Poll Reveals Key Statistics: A University of Michigan poll conducted in early 2022 surveyed adults aged 50-80 about their experiences with arthritis and joint pain. Here are some key findings: Prevalence: A significant portion (60%) of respondents reported a doctor's diagnosis of arthritis, with osteoarthritis being the most common type (30%). Gender and Age: Women and adults aged 65-80 were more likely to experience joint pain compared to men and those aged 50-64. Severity: While 30% reported no arthritis symptoms, the remaining 70% experienced joint pain. Of those with pain, 31% rated it as mild, 31% as moderate, and 8% as severe. Women and individuals with the characteristics mentioned above were more likely to report moderate or severe pain. These statistics highlight the significant impact of arthritis and joint pain on the lives of older adults. Understanding Degenerative Disc Disease: Wear and Tear on Your Spinal Cushions Degenerative disc disease is a common culprit behind back pain. As we age and use our spines, the discs between our vertebrae naturally wear down. By age 65, around 20% of adults in the US show some degree of disc degeneration, increasing to 35% by 80. It's important to remember that everyone experiences some level of degeneration over time, and it may not always cause pain or worsen. The progression can vary from stagnant to slow or rapid. What are Spinal Discs? Think of your spinal discs as fluid-filled cushions stacked between the bones (vertebrae) in your spine. These flexible discs allow your spine to bend and twist freely without pain. They act like shock absorbers, preventing your vertebrae from grinding against each other. What Causes Degenerative Disc Disease? Several factors contribute to degenerative disc disease , some controllable and others not. Age is a major risk factor, as time takes its toll on the discs. Women are also more prone to it than men. Here are some other contributors: Excess weight puts strain on your spine. Repetitive strain from manual labor or poor posture can accelerate degeneration. Heavy lifting can also increase your risk. Symptoms: From Mild to Severe The type and severity of your symptoms depend on the progression of the disease. In the early stages, discs lose some of their fluid content, becoming dehydrated and less flexible. This can lead to: Shrinking and loss of disc height (often starting in the lower back) As the condition worsens, discs dry out further and may bulge or rupture, potentially pressing on nerves. This can cause: Bulging disc: The outer disc wall (annulus fibrosis) protrudes into the spinal canal. Ruptured disc (herniated or slipped disc): The inner disc material (nucleus pulposus) leaks out through a tear in the outer wall. While some people with bulging or ruptured discs experience no symptoms, others may have pain, numbness, or weakness radiating into one or both legs. In the most severe cases, complete disc degeneration can occur, leaving an air-filled space or even bone-on-bone contact between vertebrae. This typically results in significant pain, stiffness, and possible nerve compression. Treatment Options: Addressing the Issue Fortunately, there are various treatment options for degenerative disc disease. Nonsurgical approaches are usually the first line of defense, including: Weight loss to reduce stress on the spine. Activity modification to minimize strain on the discs. Rehab to strengthen core muscles and improve spinal flexibility. Consulting a spine specialist is crucial for exploring the most suitable treatment plan. We have the experience and training to help you with degenerative disc disease. Understanding Nerve Compression Syndromes: Pinched Nerves and Their Effects Nerve Compression: The Basics Nerve compression syndromes occur when pressure builds up on nerves in the body's peripheral nervous system. These nerves connect your brain and spinal cord to distant areas like your hands and feet. When compressed, they can cause pain, numbness, and weakness. Common Culprits: Carpal tunnel syndrome, affecting the wrist, is the most well-known example. However, various nerves throughout the body are susceptible to compression. Upper Body Examples: Carpal tunnel syndrome: Median nerve compressed in the wrist. Pronator teres syndrome: Median nerve compressed in the elbow. Radial tunnel syndrome: Pressure on the radial nerve in the elbow. Suprascapular nerve entrapment: Damage to the suprascapular nerve in the shoulder. Thoracic outlet syndrome: Compressed nerves in the lower neck and upper chest. Ulnar nerve entrapment: Compressed ulnar nerve in the elbow or wrist. Lower Body Examples: Meralgia paresthetica: Pressure on a nerve in the thigh. Peroneal nerve compression: Pressure on the peroneal nerve in the lower leg. Pudendal nerve entrapment syndrome: Compressed pudendal nerve in the pelvic area. Sciatica: Damage to the sciatic nerve in the lower back, buttocks, and leg. Tarsal tunnel syndrome: Damage to the tibial nerve in the heel or sole of the foot. Understanding Pinched Nerves: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment A pinched nerve, also known as compressed nerve, occurs when surrounding tissues put pressure on a nerve. This pressure can irritate the nerve, leading to pain, numbness, and tingling sensations in various parts of your body. Common Culprits: The most frequent sites for pinched nerves are: Neck (Cervical Radiculopathy): This can cause pain and stiffness in the neck, radiating to the shoulder and arm. Lower Back (Lumbar Radiculopathy): This can lead to pain in your back, hips, buttocks, and legs. Wrist (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome): This is a common type of pinched nerve affecting the hand and wrist. Other Potential Causes: Several conditions can contribute to pinched nerves, including: Herniated Disc: This occurs when the soft cushion between your vertebrae bulges or breaks, pressing on a nerve. Arthritis: Inflammation in the joints can put pressure on nearby nerves. Aging: Wear and tear on the spine can lead to bone spurs that compress nerves. Repetitive Movements: Activities like prolonged typing can strain your wrists and hands, potentially leading to carpal tunnel syndrome. Injuries: Sudden trauma from accidents or awkward movements can cause a pinched nerve. Signs and Symptoms: Pinched nerves can manifest in various ways, including: Pain: This can range from a sharp ache to a dull throbbing sensation. Numbness: You may experience a loss of feeling in the affected area. Muscle Weakness: The muscles controlled by the pinched nerve may feel weak or difficult to move. Tingling: A "pins and needles" sensation is a common symptom. Numbness in the extremities: You may feel like your hand or foot has "fallen asleep." Finding Relief: The good news is that pinched nerves are often treatable. We will work with you to develop a chiropractic care plan to treat your pain and the pinched nerve. Meet Dr. Spencer Meet Your Chiropractor Sciatica: Understanding the Pain and Its Causes Sciatica is a condition that causes pain or tingling along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down your leg. It's important to distinguish sciatica from general low back pain. Sciatica specifically refers to pain arising from irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve itself. The Sciatic Nerve: A Vital Highway The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body. It branches out from several nerves in your lower spine (L4 to S3) and plays a crucial role in: Moving your hamstrings and some leg muscles Providing feeling in the back and side of your lower leg and the sole of your foot What Triggers Sciatica Pain? Many different conditions can affect the sciatic nerve and cause sciatica pain. The most frequent culprit is a herniated or bulging disc in your lower back. Other potential causes include: Narrowing of the spinal canal (lumbar spinal stenosis) Misalignment of vertebrae (spondylolisthesis) Muscle spasms or inflammation in your lower back or pelvis Tumors or abscesses in the spine Who Gets Sciatica? While sciatica can affect anyone, some factors increase your risk: Age: Peak incidence occurs between 30 and 50 years old. Occupation: Jobs involving heavy lifting, awkward postures, or driving for extended periods can increase risk. Activity level: Prior sciatica can make you more susceptible, while regular exercise may offer some protection. Treatment: Sciatica can be a debilitating condition. If you experience radiating pain or tingling down your leg, Prairie Grove Chiropractic can work with you to develop a care plan that meets your needs. Sciatica can be managed with a mix of services to reduce pain and increase mobility. Understanding Scoliosis: A Curvature of the Spine Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves abnormally to the side, creating a C or S shape. While the natural curvature of the spine bends slightly forward and backward, scoliosis causes an additional sideways bend. Types of Scoliosis: Idiopathic: The most common type, with unknown cause but likely a genetic link. Congenital: A rare abnormality present at birth due to improper vertebrae formation. Neuromuscular: Caused by issues with muscles or nerves affecting the spine, often accompanying neurological conditions. Adult-Onset: Can be undiagnosed mild scoliosis that worsens with age due to weakening joints and discs, or a new development. Frequency: Scoliosis affects about 2% of the population globally. Symptoms (May Not Be Present): Back pain Difficulty standing straight Core muscle weakness Leg pain, numbness, or weakness Signs to Watch For: Uneven shoulders or shoulder blades Head not centered over the pelvis Uneven waist or hips Constant leaning to one side Uneven leg length Dimples, hair patches, or skin discoloration along the spine Considering Treatment: In collaboration with your primary care doctor, we can explore treatment options to address your scoliosis symptoms and how to improve those with a care plan developed for your unique needs. Understanding Slipped Discs (Herniated Discs): Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment A slipped disc , also known as a herniated disc, occurs when the soft inner part of a spinal disc bulges or breaks through a tear in the outer wall. This can irritate or compress nearby nerves, leading to pain. Imagine your spine as a stack of bones (vertebrae) separated by squishy cushions (discs). These discs have a tough outer shell (annulus) and a soft inner core (nucleus). A herniated disc (also called bulged, slipped, or ruptured ) happens when part of the soft inner core pushes through a tear in the tough outer shell. This can cause the disc to bulge or even rupture (completely break through). The problem arises when this bulge or tear presses on a nearby spinal nerve. Common Locations: Lower Back: This is the most frequent area for slipped discs, often causing sciatica (pain radiating down the leg). Neck: Herniation in the neck can cause pain in the neck, shoulder, and arm. Symptoms: Sudden and severe pain, often described as shooting Pain in the lower back Numbness or tingling in the buttocks, legs, or arms Weakness in the affected area Signs of paralysis (rare) Who's Most at Risk? People over 30 years old Men are more likely than women Treatment Options: Slipped discs are a common cause of back and leg pain. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve recovery and reduce the risk of complications. Talk to your doctor about the best course of action for managing your specific situation. At Prairie Grove Chiropractic and Massage with have experience helping patients with slipped discs and can help develop the best plan of action for your unique needs! Schedule a consultation so you can start getting back on your journey to wellness. 15 million+ people worldwide live with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), a life-altering condition. Causes and Consequences of Spinal Cord Injuries : Trauma (falls, accidents, violence) is the leading cause, making most SCIs preventable. Damage to the spinal cord can cause complete or partial loss of movement and sensation below the injury level. This can lead to challenges with daily activities like walking, using hands, and self-care. Complications like pain, infections, and pressure sores can further impact health and well-being. Males are more commonly affected than females. Life expectancy for people with SCI is lower due to both the injury itself and limited access to quality healthcare. This condition disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries, with higher in-hospital mortality rates. Beyond the Injury: Social and economic barriers like inaccessible environments and negative attitudes limit participation in life. Children with SCI face challenges with education and adults may struggle to find employment. The financial burden of ongoing care and lost income can be significant. Hope for Improvement: Effective prevention strategies can reduce the number of new SCIs. Early access to quality healthcare, rehabilitation, and assistive technology can significantly improve outcomes. Removing physical, social, and economic barriers is crucial for full participation in society. SCI can be a devastating condition, but with proper care and support, individuals can lead fulfilling lives. Investing in prevention and comprehensive care programs is essential to address this global challenge. Prairie Grove Chiro will work with your primary care physician to develop the best plan for your injuries. Spinal Stenosis: A Narrowing of the Spinal Canal What is Spinal Stenosis? Spinal stenosis occurs when the space within the spinal canal narrows. This narrowing can compress the spinal cord and nerves, potentially causing pain, numbness, and weakness. The lower back and neck are the most common areas affected. Spinal stenosis is common in the US, affecting approximately 11% of older adults. Studies estimate that 1 in 1,000 people over 65 and 5 in 1,000 people over 50 are likely to develop spinal stenosis. The disease is expected to increase in prevalence to about 18 million people in the next decade. Symptoms (Not Always Present): Common symptoms of spinal stenosis include pain and achiness in the lower back, buttocks, and sometimes one or both legs. The pain may also be accompanied by numbness or tingling in the lower legs or feet. However, more than 80% of people with spinal stenosis don't experience symptoms and don't need treatment. Pain, cramping, or weakness in the legs (often worsens with standing or walking, improves with bending forward or sitting) - in lower back stenosis Neck pain Numbness, tingling, or weakness in an arm, hand, leg, or foot - in neck stenosis Difficulty with walking and balance (in severe cases) Problems with bowel or bladder control (in severe cases) Treatment The good news is that many cases of spinal stenosis can be managed effectively without surgery. Talk to your chiropractor at Prairie Grove Chiro to discuss your personalized care needs to help alleviate the pain and symptoms associated with spinal stenosis. Understanding Spondylolisthesis: A Slipped Vertebra Spondylolisthesis is a condition where one vertebra slips forward relative to the one below it. This slippage can cause various symptoms, including pain and nerve irritation. Causes: There are five main causes of spondylolisthesis: Degenerative: Wear-and-tear changes in the spine lead to instability and slippage. This is more common in adults and females. Isthmic: A defect in a specific part of the vertebra (pars interarticularis) allows for slippage. This may be linked to sports or repetitive movements in adolescents and young adults and is more frequent in males. Traumatic: A fracture due to an accident causes the slippage. Dysplastic: A congenital condition where the facet joints are abnormally oriented, leading to slippage. This is more common in children and affects females more than males. Pathologic: Underlying diseases like bone disorders or infections weaken the spine, causing slippage. Risk Factors: Family history of spondylolisthesis Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) Spina bifida (birth defect affecting the spine) Obesity (for degenerative spondylolisthesis) Location and Prevalence: The lower back (lumbar spine) is the most common area affected. It can also occur in the neck (cervical spine) and very rarely in the chest (thoracic spine). Degenerative spondylolisthesis is more prevalent in adults. Isthmic spondylolisthesis affects adolescents and young adults but may not cause symptoms until later. Dysplastic spondylolisthesis is seen in children, with a higher prevalence in females. Estimates suggest 6-7% of people have isthmic spondylolisthesis by age 18. Grade 1 (slight slippage) is the most common type. The slippage most often occurs between the L5 and S1 vertebrae in the lower back. Treatment It's important to discuss the best course of treatment with your doctor to determine the approach that best suits your individual needs and circumstances. Prairie Grove Chiropractic - Feel the difference. BOOK NOW Sprained or Strained? Understanding Common Soft Tissue Injuries Sprains and strains are common injuries that happen when soft tissues in your body get overstretched or torn. These tissues include: Ligaments: These connect bones at joints, providing stability. Sprains often affect ankles, wrists, thumbs, and knees. Muscles: These contract to move your body. Tendons: These connect muscles to bones, transmitting the force of muscle contractions. Strains are common in the back, hamstrings (back of the thigh), and areas used heavily in sports. Causes: Sprains: Caused by falls, twists, or blows that force a joint beyond its normal range of motion. Strains: Caused by sudden twists or repetitive movements that overwork a muscle or tendon. Symptoms (Both Sprains and Strains): Pain Swelling Bruising Limited movement in the affected area Treatment: We can help sprains or strains heal and get you back to living. Depending on the injury, the treatment plan will vary. We will develop a plan to meet your unique patient needs! Understanding Ligaments and Tendons: While both sprains and strains are soft tissue injuries, they affect different parts of your body's connective tissues. Ligaments: These are tough, fibrous bands that connect bones to other bones or cartilage, providing stability to your joints. Your ankles, wrists, thumbs, and knees are common areas for ligament sprains. Tendons: These are also fibrous cords, but they connect muscles to bones, allowing muscles to generate movement. Legs, knees, feet, and the back are frequently affected by muscle or tendon strains. Sprain Symptoms: Typically occur around a joint, often following a sudden movement. Severity depends on the extent of ligament damage. Symptoms can include: Pain Swelling Bruising Limited joint movement Difficulty putting weight on the joint A popping sound at the time of injury Strain Symptoms: May occur suddenly or develop gradually over time. Symptoms include: Pain or tenderness in the affected muscle Swelling Bruising Muscle spasms or cramping Muscle weakness Limited movement in the affected area Feeling a Pop: You might feel a popping sensation during a sprain or strain, especially if the ligament or tendon tears significantly. Remember: Both sprains and strains can often be treated at home with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). However, if you experience severe pain, significant swelling, or difficulty using the injured area, consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment. We can work on a care plan to help heal your strain or sprain. Understanding TMJ Disorders: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Your TMJ (temporomandibular joint) is a hinge-like joint on each side of your jaw, connecting it to your skull. TMJ disorders (TMD) can cause pain in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. Possible Causes (The culprit can be a mystery): Genetics, arthritis, or jaw injury may play a role. Teeth grinding (bruxism) can be a factor, but it doesn't always lead to TMD. Relief is Possible (Often without surgery): Fortunately, most TMJ pain is temporary and responds well to self-care or non-surgical treatments. Surgery is usually considered a last resort. Symptoms to Watch For: Jaw pain or tenderness Pain in one or both TMJs Earache Chewing difficulty or pain Facial pain Difficulty opening or closing your mouth completely Clicking or grating sounds in the jaw (not necessarily a cause for concern unless accompanied by pain or limited movement) Treatment Prairie Grove Chiropractic can help with TMJ pain. Schedule a consultation so we can develop a care plan to reduce the effects of the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ. Understanding Vertigo and Balance Issues Vertigo, dizziness, and trouble balancing are surprisingly common, affecting nearly 40% of adults in the US at some point. Women are slightly more likely to experience these issues than men. Inner Ear's Role in Balance: The culprit behind these problems often lies in the vestibular system. This complex system, located in the inner ear, brain stem, and cerebellum (a brain region involved in coordination), plays a critical role in: Maintaining balance Regulating posture Helping us sense our orientation in space Causes of Vertigo and Dizziness: While the cause can be unclear in some cases, several conditions can trigger vertigo, dizziness, and imbalance: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): This is the most common cause. Tiny calcium deposits get lodged in the inner ear canals, leading to brief vertigo spells triggered by head movements. Fortunately, BPPV is treatable. Meniere's Disease: This involves an inner ear fluid imbalance causing vertigo episodes lasting minutes to hours, often accompanied by hearing fluctuations, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and ear fullness. Viral or Bacterial Labyrinthitis: Inner ear inflammation due to viruses or bacteria can trigger vertigo attacks lasting from hours to days. Neurological Conditions: These include brain tumors, migraines, strokes, multiple sclerosis, and others. Non-neurological Causes: Diabetes, heart arrhythmias, hyperventilation, sudden blood pressure drops upon standing (orthostatic hypotension), anxiety, panic attacks, and certain medications can also contribute. Remember: If you experience persistent dizziness or vertigo, consult a healthcare professional to determine the cause and get appropriate treatment. Prairie Grove Chiropractic can work with you to develop a care plan that reduces vertigo. Understanding Whiplash: More Than Just a Neck Sprain Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden, forceful back-and-forth movement of the head and neck. This motion is often likened to the cracking of a whip, hence the name. Whiplash stands as the most frequent injury following car accidents, affecting a staggering 83% of people involved in collisions. Unfortunately, it can also lead to chronic disability for some individuals. The economic burden of whiplash in the US is significant. Medical care, disability payments, and lost work due to sick leave are estimated to cost $3.9 billion annually. When legal battles are factored in, the cost climbs to over $29 billion. While estimates of whiplash cases (Whiplash Associated Disorders or WAD) vary across studies, the US sees an estimated rate of 4 cases per 1,000 people. “Medically consulted injuries in motor-vehicle incidents totaled 5.2 million in 2022, and total motor-vehicle injury costs were estimated at $481.2 billion. Costs include wage and productivity losses, medical expenses, administrative expenses, motor-vehicle property damage, and employer costs.” Common Causes: Rear-end car crashes: This is the most frequent cause of whiplash. Sports accidents: Collisions or sudden stops during sports can trigger whiplash. Physical abuse: Trauma to the neck can cause whiplash injuries. Falls: A fall with a forceful impact on the head or neck can also lead to whiplash. While sometimes used interchangeably, whiplash is a more specific term compared to "neck sprain" or "neck strain," which can encompass other types of neck injuries. In some cases, whiplash can lead to longer-lasting neck pain and other issues, such as: Headaches Shoulder and upper back pain Arm numbness or tingling Fatigue Dizziness Difficulty concentrating Blurred vision Tinnitus (ringing in ears) Sleep problems Irritability Memory issues Depression Seeking Medical Attention: If you experience neck pain or other whiplash symptoms following an accident or injury, it's crucial to see a healthcare professional promptly. Early diagnosis helps rule out more serious injuries that can worsen if left untreated. At Prairie Grove Chiropractic and Massage, we have the expertise to help patients treat whiplash. Target Your Workplace Pain: How Chiropractic Care Can Help Work-related injuries can be a real drag, affecting your productivity and overall well-being. Back pain, neck strain, and carpal tunnel syndrome are just a few of the common issues that can arise from repetitive motions, poor posture, or lifting heavy objects. According the U.S. Bureau of Labor, “Private industry employers reported 2.8 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2022, up 7.5 percent from 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. This increase is driven by the rise in both injuries, up 4.5 percent to 2.3 million cases, and illnesses up 26.1 percent to 460,700 cases. (See chart 1). The increase in illnesses is driven by the rise in respiratory illness cases, up 35.4 percent to 365,000 cases in 2022. This comes after a decrease in respiratory illnesses in 2021 compared to 2020. These estimates are from the Survey of Occupational Injuries and illnesses (SOII).” Chiropractic care can be a valuable option for managing these work-related musculoskeletal problems. Here's why: Addresses the Root Cause: Chiropractors focus on identifying the underlying cause of your pain, not just masking symptoms with medication. This can lead to longer-lasting relief and prevent future flare-ups. Drug-Free and Non-Invasive: Unlike some traditional medical approaches, chiropractic care avoids invasive procedures and relies on manual adjustments to improve musculoskeletal function. This can be especially appealing for those who prefer a more natural approach to healing. Effective Treatment for Common Injuries: Chiropractic care is demonstrably effective in treating back pain, neck pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome, some of the most frequent work-related complaints. Here's a look at some specific work-related injuries chiropractors can address: Back Pain: A leading cause of workplace disability, back pain can be effectively managed through chiropractic adjustments and targeted exercises. Neck Pain: Poor posture while using computers or lifting heavy objects can lead to neck strain. Chiropractic care can improve flexibility and reduce pain. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Repetitive typing or hand movements can compress nerves in the wrist, causing pain and numbness. Chiropractic adjustments can help alleviate these symptoms. Treatment While chiropractic care offers a valuable approach to pain management and mobility, it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. We will work with your primary care physician to develop the proper treatment plan for you. Why Prairie Grove Chiro? Top Rated Chiropractic Team with 400+ 5-star review at our primary clinic. A chiropractor is a licensed doctor who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders. Chiros use manual manipulation or adjust the spine and the body’s joints to correct misalignments, allowing the body to heal itself. Chiropractors can also use exercise and nutritional counseling as other forms of treatment. At Prairie Grove Chiropractic and Massage, we have an experienced and award-winning chiropractor, Dr. Spencer! Meet Dr. Spencer Meet Your Chiropractor What are chiropractic adjustments? How often should I have an adjustment? Chiropractic adjustments involve the manual manipulation of joints. In other words, exerting a sustained and gentle thrust to a joint to correct its positioning and alignment in the body. This repositioning improves join mobility and functioning, often alleviating pain. Chiropractors also use stretching and massaging of the muscles to reduce spasms, which allow for better realignment. In addition, chiropractors use other modalities such as electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, heat, ice, and laser therapy to supplement the adjustments and promote healing. By putting the body in its naturally designed position and reducing pressure on the nervous system, chiropractic care allows the body to heal itself and operate as designed to reduce pain and promote well-being. At Prairie Grove Chiro, we use the best adjustment types for you personalized needs. Prairie Grove Chiropractic - Feel the difference. BOOK NOW What is subluxation? Subluxation is the misalignment or dislocation of the vertebrae of the spine that interferes with nerve transmission. In other word a spinal joint is out of place and puts pressure on nerves and it messes with the nerves ability to do its’ job. When the nerve can’t do its’ job, the body can’t operate properly and signals from the nerve are not delivered properly. This can cause pain, inflammation, weakness, and can affect organs from functioning properly. Precise spinal manipulations correct the positioning of the vertebra, unlock and realign the spine, and reduce the pressure on the nerve and surrounding tissue. This allows for more movement in the joint and proper nerve conductivity. Often a pop or crack can be heard during the adjustment. This is not the bones cracking but is the release of gases in the synovial fluid of the joint. What is disc degeneration? Disc degeneration is the wearing away of the discs which are the shock absorber in your spine. It is common in adults over age 40 and can lead to pain and decreased mobility. The disc, which has a jelly like substance, dries out as we age and does not absorb shocks as well. This condition is impacted by the wear and tear of life on the spine. Discs are designed to help the back remain flexible, as they deteriorate, reduced range of motion, pain, numbness, tingling in extremities, and muscle weakness can occur. This condition is also known as a slipped disc or a ruptured disc. What is disc herniation? A herniated disc occurs when the disc, the rubbery cushions located between spinal vertebrae, experiences a rupture that caused the gelatinous inner center to push out through a tear in its outer ring. This rupture can cause pressure on the nervous system and cause shooting pain, numbness or tingling in the back, arms or legs, and muscle weakness to the area affected by the nerve. It can occur anywhere in the spinal column, though is most common in the lower back. In some instances, herniated disc can cause no pain. What is discopathy? Discopathy is the beginning of the degeneration of the intervertebral discs of the spine. It is a general diagnosis to indicate that changes are occurring in the integrity and health of the discs. This degeneration can lead to herniated disc and cause pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots. It is progressive and disc herniations can cause pain, tingling, muscle weakness, and it most often occurs in the lower back. See for yourself why Prairie Grove Chiropractic and Massage is so highly rated! What is chronic pain? Chronic pain is a condition of ongoing pain that occurs past the normal healing time of the body and can last months to years. It interferes with daily functioning and can cause fatigue, mood disorders, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. The body’s reaction to this pain causes what’s called a “pain cycle ” which is a difficult cycle to break. Between 18 – 34.5% of American adults experience chronic pain and it can be caused by a long-lasting illness, injury, and disease. Many scientists believe that a low level of endorphins in the blood may be linked to chronic pain conditions. Chronic pain can be felt in many ways and can include pain and sensations including aching, burning, shooting, squeezing, stiffness, stinging, and throbbing. I didn’t have pain when I was younger – why do I have it now? Over the years our bodies get a lot of wear and tear from sports, injuries, work, and everyday life. This takes a toll on us as time goes on and we don’t bounce back like we used to. Just like with cars, our parts begin to wear out, get misaligned, and/or damaged. The best way to “feel younger” and reduce aches and pains is to stay flexible and keep moving. This decreases pain and stiffness, and it strengthens your muscles. Chiropractic care can help to alleviate the stiffness in your joints and keep your body in alignment, which will allow you to continue to remain as active as possible. It will also help to alleviate body pain. Massage, TENS and cold laser therapy can also help with muscle stiffness and pain that comes with age. Who should use a chiropractor? Chiropractors promote health and well-being for people all ages and some chiropractors even specialize in animal care. At Prairie Grove Chiropractic and Massage, we treat people of diverse ages for diverse conditions. We can treat pain resulting from injury and congenital issues, improve posture related issues, provide pregnancy related relief, and help with headache management. Children ranging from babies to teens can benefit from our services to promote proper growth and development, enhance sleep, aid in digestion, support immune function, and assist with behavioral and attention issues. Regardless of age, chiropractic care benefits most everyone. How many adjustments will I need? The number of visits you will require depends on you and the condition that is being treated. It is best to discuss this with the doctor treating you. It is not a one and done therapy though. Healing takes time and following the recommended treatment schedule is advised for your best possible outcomes. How do I book an appointment for chiropractic and massage services? Booking an appointment is easy, you can use our booking tool or you can give our office a call at: (479) 846-4110 . What are the benefits of using a chiropractor? There are many benefits to chiropractic care : Improves posture Reduces pain and improves range of motion Reduce symptoms of chronic conditions Treats and promotes healing of neck and spine injuries Improves mood Improves neurological conditions Promotes digestive health Promotes healthy immune function Eases headache symptoms Reduces reliance on pain relievers Chiropractic Care Gets Results Clinical studies have found that chiropractic care is as effective as physical therapy for dealing with low back and neck pain, is an effective treatment for recurrent headaches , and when combined with medical care it provides greater pain relief than medical care alone , is more effective in reducing pain than muscle relaxants , and major studies have found that participants received superior long and short term clinical benefits from chiropractic treatments. Are there risks to having chiropractic adjustments? When performed by skilled and trained professionals, chiropractic care is a safe and effective treatment for many issues and for the promotion of overall health. Serious complications are rare, but could include: A herniated disk or a worsening of an existing disk herniation Compression of nerves in the lower spinal column A certain type of stroke after neck manipulation Who should NOT seek a chiropractor? The Mayo Clinic advises individuals with the following conditions not to use chiropractic services: Severe osteoporosis Numbness, tingling, or loss of strength in an arm or leg Cancer in your spine An increased risk of stroke A known bone abnormality in the upper neck Bone fractures or bone tumors Severe arthritis Do chiropractors use special equipment? Aside from using our hands, chiropractors at Prairie Grove Chiro use a variety of equipment to supplement their treatments. We have listed some below and make sure to check out our services page for more information on some of our most popular services. Activator and Impulse Adjusting devices Drop Tables Electrical Stimulation Hot and Cold Packs Cold Laser Therapy Massage X-Rays Machine Spinal Decompression Machine Pelvic Blocks Kinesio Taping Custom Orthotics VIEW SERVICES Do chiro and massage therapies work together? Absolutely! Massage therapy is a complimentary treatment to chiropractic care. It is effective in reducing muscle spasms, increasing blood flow to injured areas to promote healing, reducing pain, and helps you get a more effective chiropractic adjustment, as it reduces tightness that can impede adjustments. We offer both services at our main location in Fayetteville and will offer both massage and chiro services at our new location in Prairie Grove. Do stretching and exercises work well with chiro adjustments? Exercise is an integral part of remaining healthy and strong. Chiropractors often recommend various therapeutic strengthening and stretching exercises to improve the health of your body and target your areas of need. These corrective exercises, if done consistently, will create a stronger more stable core which will help to keep your back aligned and will use bodily movements or postures to restore desirable changes in diseased or injured tissues. How is massage different than chiropractic adjustments? Massage targets the body’s soft tissue which is made up of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Our licensed massage therapists use varying techniques such as kneading, stroking, stretching, and compression to relax the soft tissue, improve circulation and reduce muscle tension and pain. A massage can be a very relaxing experience and helps to reduce stress. However, depending on the severity of your muscle spasms and preference of treatment, some discomfort can be felt while they work the knots out of your body. Consistent massages have a very beneficial impact on your body – stress tightens you up and massage and other techniques help to reduce that stress and eliminate long-term pain. Chiropractic care focuses on the musculoskeletal system and corrects misalignments of the spine and joints to improve nerve conductivity, reduce pain, and increase range of motion. Prairie Grove Chiro strives to improve the wellbeing of our patients by alleviating pain and enhancing mobility. OUR VISION Prairie Grove Chiro aspires to be a pillar of health and wellness in our community. We envision a future where people feel empowered to move freely and live life to the fullest. OUR VALUES Quality Care Exceptional Patient Service Integrity Health and Wellness God and Family What is spinal decompression? Spinal Decompression is a nonsurgical, non-invasive treatment for alleviating the pain associated with herniated of degenerative discs. The patient lies down on the Accu-Spina decompression table and is harnessed onto it. The doctor then sets the machine to address your specific spinal issue and then the machine gently stretches the spin. The gentle stretching of the spine reduces the pressure on the discs and creates a negative pressure which helps the disc to retract the herniation or bulge back into the disc and reduces pressure on the nerves. In addition, nutrient rich fluids, oxygen, and water are better able to flow into the injured area, promoting healing. Treatments last 30 – 45 minutes and you may require several months of treatment to see results. Disc Centers of America, our partner, shows a success rate of 86% - 91% success rate for those who underwent treatment and avoided surgery. Is chiropractic adjustment the same as spinal decompression? A chiropractic adjustment is not the same as spinal decompression. It is one of many potential components of our diversified technique that uses an array of modalities to achieve quality care for our clientele. Should I try chiropractic solutions before surgery? In our opinion, if a patient can have positive results without surgery, one should try for the following reasons: Non-invasive – it is a conservative approach that avoids the risks of surgery such as anesthesia, infection, and scarring. Potential Pain Relief – it can improve joint mobility, and nerve conductivity which can alleviate pain, reduce headaches, and provide relief. Improve Function – restoration of movement and flexibility in the spine and joints can allow an improvement in life and management of daily activities. Identify underlying issues – Chiropractors may identify underlying pain causes and recommend therapies such as exercises or lifestyle changes that can impact and promote long-term healing. Cost Effective – Surgery is expensive. Chiropractic care can also be covered by insurance and costs much less. For our patients, with no insurance – we offer affordable pricing and packages to make sure chiropractic care is in reach for everyone. Chiropractic Techniques Here are some of the chiropractic techniques we use at Prairie Grove Chiropractic and Massage. Your treatment plan may include some or all. Each care plan is based on a patient's unique needs. Diversified Technique Spinal Manipulation Spinal Alignment Activator Method Thompson Drop-Table Technique Gonstead Adjustment Flexion Distraction Technique Cold Laser Therapy BOOK NOW What is the diversified technique? The diversified technique is the most widely used chiropractic adjustment method world-wide. It involves specific quick and short thrusts at a precise angle, depth, and direction to targeted joints to correct misalignments and remove interruptions to the central nervous system. It can also involve using features of a specially designed chiropractic table, which the client lies on, or the positioning of blocks to then return the misaligned joint to its proper position. It is a safe and effective method of relieving pain and stiffness to the body. What is spinal manipulation? Spinal Manipulation is a technique that chiropractors use to realign the spinal column. They use their hands or a chiropractic device to apply a quick and targeted thrust to the joint to correct its positioning. This thrust applies force to the joint to move it more than it would on its’ own and to return it to an aligned position. Spinal manipulation is a safe and useful technique in treating low back pain, neck pain, headaches, and sciatica. What is spinal alignment? Spinal Alignment refers to the alignment or positioning of the head, shoulders, spine, hips, knees, and ankles align with one another. The spine plays a key role and supports the entire body. When all the joints are in their proper position, posture should be correct, and your body should function as designed. If your spine has joints that are out of position, the positioning and function of the rest of the body will be impaired. The misalignment can cause pain not only in your back but can affect knees, hips, neck, limit range of motion, and can cause headaches, fatigue, illness, and numbness and tingling in your appendages. Your quality of life can be affected negatively. Proper spinal alignment is essential to your body’s health and well-being. What is an activator? The activator method is a therapeutic intervention device used by Chiropractors. It is either a spring loaded or electronically powered hand-held tool that provides a quick, low forced impulse that is designed to move joints into their proper alignment. It is an extremely safe treatment and has the benefits of controlled force to a localized position. It does not require the bending or twisting of the body to reposition the joint and its high-speed delivery method allows for quick targeting of the affected area. What is the Thompson Drop-Table Technique? This chiropractic technique also uses high velocity, low amplitude thrusts, but combines them with a “drop table.” Its goal is to prevent over adjustment. While the doctor still uses force to manipulate the spine, the force is reduced as part of the table is designed to drop away as the adjustment is occurring. This allows for a gentler, very controlled adjustment, which utilizes gravity to realign the spine. What is the Gonstead Adjustment? The Gonstead process of adjustment involves the analysis of your spine using five specific criteria: visualization, instrumentation, static palpitation, motion palpitation, and x-ray analysis. The goal is to restore and maintain optimal health by identifying and correcting any misalignment of the spine to ensure there is no interference with the central nervous system. This technique can use equipment in the adjustment process including a Cervical Chair, Knee Chest Table, Pelvic Bench, and a Hy-Lo and or Slot Table. What is the Flexion Distraction Technique? The Flexion Distraction Technique is a gentle, safe, and controlled treatment designed to open and widen the spinal canal area reducing pressure on nerves and increasing motion to spinal joints. The patient lies face down on the specially designed table and the chiropractor moves the table in a rhythmical, smooth, slow, and specific manner to decompress, flex, and manipulate the spine. What is cold laser therapy? Cold Laser Therapy is a low intensity laser treatment that stimulated healing in the body with low levels of red and infrared light. It helps to ease pain, reduce swelling, and impact injury size. This hand-held device beams the light energy at your skin and affected area to promote healing. Looking for new patient information? If you have any questions, please call or contact us . What should I expect during the initial consultation? All new patients will need to fill out intake paperwork and will receive a consultation and examination by our experienced chiropractor. We will assess your medical history, discuss your concerns and symptomatology, and identify your goals. Diagnostic x-rays and a foot scan are a part of our initial examination to identify and rule out any pathology which could be causing your problems. A full musculoskeletal examination will also help our chiropractor understand your physiology and establish a treatment plan for your condition. Once it is determined that chiropractic treatments are appropriate for you, only then will you receive your first adjustment. Contact Prairie Grove Chiropractic to schedule an appointment and experience the difference a comprehensive approach can make! BOOK NOW Chiropractic Care Chiropractic Care focuses on the idea that spinal alignment is linked to overall health. Chiropractors believe the body can heal itself naturally, with the right support. The word "chiropractic" itself comes from Greek words meaning "hand" and "practice," referring to the hands-on treatments they provide. Chiropractors use manual adjustments of the spine to improve health, aiming to avoid surgery or medication. Some may also prescribe exercises or recommend other therapies like nutrition counseling. Spinal Adjustments While chiropractors are well-known for spinal adjustments, they aren't the only healthcare professionals who offer this treatment. Osteopathic doctors, physical therapists, and even some specially trained medical doctors can perform spinal manipulation as well. The goal of spinal manipulation is twofold: to relieve pain and improve flexibility in stiff or tight areas of the spine. There are various techniques, but generally, the practitioner applies a controlled force (sometimes with a quick thrust) to a specific joint in your back or neck, using their hands or a special tool. Alternatively, they might use a rhythmic, non-thrusting motion to enhance movement in your spine and pelvis. Special tables can also be used to aid in the effectiveness of the adjustment. Massage Therapy Message Therapy is a versatile practice that can be used for two main purposes: improving general well-being and managing specific health conditions. During a massage session, a therapist applies pressure and movements to your soft tissues, like muscles, tendons, and skin. This practice has roots in many cultures around the world, dating back centuries. In fact, massage was one of the earliest methods used to alleviate pain. The term encompasses a wide range of techniques. In Western countries, Swedish massage (also called classical massage) is the most common type. This foundational style forms the core of most massage therapist training programs. Beyond Swedish massage, there are many other specialized approaches, such as sports massage, stretching, and other styles. Spinal Decompression Non-surgical spinal decompression is a treatment option that uses motorized traction to potentially alleviate back pain. During this procedure, the spine is gently stretched, which helps to alter the forces and position of your vertebrae. This creates a negative pressure within the discs, the gel-like cushions between your spinal bones. This negative pressure may help bulging or herniated discs retract, relieving pressure on nerves and other nearby structures. Improved circulation of fluids, oxygen, and nutrients is also believed to be promoted within the discs, aiding the healing process. Activator Method During treatment, the chiropractor positions the Activator on a specific joint in your spine or extremity. They apply a light pressure followed by a quick thrust with the instrument's head. This thrust is precise and controlled thanks to the small, fast movement of the rubberized head. Because of this controlled motion, you'll typically remain still throughout the treatment, unlike some manual chiropractic adjustments. In other words, it is a chiropractic technique that utilizes a handheld instrument to deliver precise adjustments to the spine. We usually combine the activator method with other manual techniques. Diversified Technique Diversified Technique is the most widely used chiropractic method. It involves applying quick, controlled thrusts (high velocity, low amplitude) to realign and improve movement in your spine. A popping sound may sometimes occur during these adjustments as gas escapes from the joints. This versatile technique can be used on various joints throughout your body, with a focus on spinal adjustments. The chiropractor will position you in different ways to effectively target specific areas. The diversified technique is used to address joint dysfunction, increase mobility, and reduce pain, making it suitable for a wide range of conditions. Cold Laser Therapy Cold Laser Therapy or Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a treatment that uses light to trigger cellular changes. Low-powered lasers deliver light particles (photons) that are absorbed by cells, leading to potential therapeutic benefits. Often referred to as cold laser therapy, LLLT has been used for many years to manage pain. These lasers typically have a wavelength of 600 to 1000 nanometers and emit continuous low-level light to promote pain reduction and healing. Research has shown promise for LLLT's ability to provide pain relief and reduce inflammation, with supporting evidence from both lab studies and clinical trials. Orthotics Custom orthotics help with correcting alignment and may be a suggestion for your chiropractic care treatment. Prescription orthotics are specially designed shoe inserts made just for you. Unlike generic inserts, they perfectly match the curves of your feet and how you walk. We will scan your feet; our chiropractor will address your unique needs and any foot problems you may have when creating your custom orthotics. Electronic Stimulation Electronic Stimulation - also known as electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) or e-stim, is a technique used by chiropractors to target specific areas of the body. Electronic stimulation works by delivering gentle electrical currents through electrodes attached to your skin. These electrical pulses stimulate muscle contractions, mimicking the way your brain naturally sends signals to your muscles. Kinesio Taping Kinesio Taping is a versatile tool that can be applied in different ways to provide support, improve movement efficiency, and even help prevent injuries. Its elasticity allows it to assist tissues by promoting proper function and movement. This can be helpful for both injury prevention and recovery. Kinesio tape is used by chiropractors alongside manual therapy and rehab exercises to address various aches and pains. From the spine to ankles, Kinesio tape can potentially benefit anyone, from high school athletes to professionals, as long as they don't have adhesive allergies. Corrective Exercises and Stretching Corrective exercises are a key tool used by chiropractors to help you recover from injuries and enhance your body's overall function. They combine elements of physical therapy and fitness training to address specific issues within your musculoskeletal system, the network of your muscles and bones. These exercises often target imbalances or weaknesses that may be contributing to pain or limitations. Corrective exercises are usually gentle and performed slowly, often under the guidance of a chiropractor or other qualified healthcare professional and may focus on strengthening, stretching, and/or balance. This ensures they are tailored to your specific needs and are performed safely and effectively. Supplement and Nutritional Guidance Spinal adjustments are a well-known aspect of chiropractic care, but many chiropractors offer a more comprehensive approach to well-being. We understand the significant impact that nutrition has on overall health, making us valuable partners in your quest for better health. Chiropractors can provide personalized guidance on nutrition and suggest supplements to complement your chiropractic care and empower you to take charge of your health from a holistic perspective. While chiropractic care is often associated with spinal adjustments, many chiropractors take a holistic approach to well-being. This includes recognizing the significant role that nutrition plays in overall health. Chiropractors can be valuable partners in your journey towards achieving your health goals by providing personalized nutritional guidance and supplement recommendations. • What to Expect - Initial Consultation | Chiropractor PG

What to Expect at Your Initial Consultation At an initial consultation for chiropractic or spinal decompression treatments, our chiropractor will assess mobility, balance, spinal alignment, and more to determine the correct chiropractic or decompression care plan for you. Each patient has different needs and a care plan may include chiropractic, massage, and other treatments. Please bring a photo ID and your insurance information, if applicable. At the start of your consultation, you will complete our new patient paperwork. This paperwork will ask for your family history because some issues in your body can be hereditary (but that does not mean that we cannot fix them). It will also ask you questions about your health habits and your medical history. We want to cover all bases so that we are able to help you as much as possible. Once that is complete, our medical assistant or the chiropractor will run x-rays and an orthopedic (foot) scan. Next, the chiropractor will discuss what the patient is feeling, pain levels, past injuries, and other information to conduct a patient assessment and examination. The patient examination will require you to move around and possibly even lay down so that we can get a better feel for what is going on. The Chiropractor will develop a care plan based on your personalized needs. Be sure to tell Prairie Grove Chiropractic all about the pain you are experiencing and any other symptoms you may be having. And don't worry - we are not one of those offices that pressures our patients to but a prepaid plan. We offer affordable non-insurance rates and accept most major insurances. Have questions?
