What is a Chiropractor?
A chiropractor is a licensed doctor who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders. Chiros use manual manipulation or adjust the spine and the body’s joints to correct misalignments, allowing the body to heal itself. Chiropractors can also use exercise and nutritional counseling as other forms of treatment. At Prairie Grove Chiropractic and Massage, we have an experienced and award-winning chiropractor, Dr. Spencer!

What are chiropractic adjustments? How often should I have an adjustment?
Chiropractic adjustments involve the manual manipulation of joints. In other words, exerting a sustained and gentle thrust to a joint to correct its positioning and alignment in the body. This repositioning improves join mobility and functioning, often alleviating pain. Chiropractors also use stretching and massaging of the muscles to reduce spasms, which allow for better realignment. In addition, chiropractors use other modalities such as electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, heat, ice, and laser therapy to supplement the adjustments and promote healing. By putting the body in its naturally designed position and reducing pressure on the nervous system, chiropractic care allows the body to heal itself and operate as designed to reduce pain and promote well-being. At Prairie Grove Chiro, we use the best adjustment types for you personalized needs.
What is subluxation?
Subluxation is the misalignment or dislocation of the vertebrae of the spine that interferes with nerve transmission. In other word a spinal joint is out of place and puts pressure on nerves and it messes with the nerves ability to do its’ job. When the nerve can’t do its’ job, the body can’t operate properly and signals from the nerve are not delivered properly. This can cause pain, inflammation, weakness, and can affect organs from functioning properly.
Precise spinal manipulations correct the positioning of the vertebra, unlock and realign the spine, and reduce the pressure on the nerve and surrounding tissue. This allows for more movement in the joint and proper nerve conductivity. Often a pop or crack can be heard during the adjustment. This is not the bones cracking but is the release of gases in the synovial fluid of the joint.
What is disc degeneration?
Disc degeneration is the wearing away of the discs which are the shock absorber in your spine. It is common in adults over age 40 and can lead to pain and decreased mobility. The disc, which has a jelly like substance, dries out as we age and does not absorb shocks as well. This condition is impacted by the wear and tear of life on the spine. Discs are designed to help the back remain flexible, as they deteriorate, reduced range of motion, pain, numbness, tingling in extremities, and muscle weakness can occur. This condition is also known as a slipped disc or a ruptured disc.
What is disc herniation?
A herniated disc occurs when the disc, the rubbery cushions located between spinal vertebrae, experiences a rupture that caused the gelatinous inner center to push out through a tear in its outer ring. This rupture can cause pressure on the nervous system and cause shooting pain, numbness or tingling in the back, arms or legs, and muscle weakness to the area affected by the nerve. It can occur anywhere in the spinal column, though is most common in the lower back. In some instances, herniated disc can cause no pain.
What is discopathy?
Discopathy is the beginning of the degeneration of the intervertebral discs of the spine. It is a general diagnosis to indicate that changes are occurring in the integrity and health of the discs. This degeneration can lead to herniated disc and cause pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots. It is progressive and disc herniations can cause pain, tingling, muscle weakness, and it most often occurs in the lower back.

What is chronic pain?
Chronic pain is a condition of ongoing pain that occurs past the normal healing time of the body and can last months to years. It interferes with daily functioning and can cause fatigue, mood disorders, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. The body’s reaction to this pain causes what’s called a “pain cycle” which is a difficult cycle to break. Between 18 – 34.5% of American adults experience chronic pain and it can be caused by a long-lasting illness, injury, and disease. Many scientists believe that a low level of endorphins in the blood may be linked to chronic pain conditions. Chronic pain can be felt in many ways and can include pain and sensations including aching, burning, shooting, squeezing, stiffness, stinging, and throbbing.
I didn’t have pain when I was younger – why do I have it now?
Over the years our bodies get a lot of wear and tear from sports, injuries, work, and everyday life. This takes a toll on us as time goes on and we don’t bounce back like we used to. Just like with cars, our parts begin to wear out, get misaligned, and/or damaged. The best way to “feel younger” and reduce aches and pains is to stay flexible and keep moving. This decreases pain and stiffness, and it strengthens your muscles. Chiropractic care can help to alleviate the stiffness in your joints and keep your body in alignment, which will allow you to continue to remain as active as possible. It will also help to alleviate body pain. Massage, TENS and cold laser therapy can also help with muscle stiffness and pain that comes with age.

Do chiro and massage therapies work together?
Absolutely! Massage therapy is a complimentary treatment to chiropractic care. It is effective in reducing muscle spasms, increasing blood flow to injured areas to promote healing, reducing pain, and helps you get a more effective chiropractic adjustment, as it reduces tightness that can impede adjustments. We offer both services at our main location in Fayetteville and will offer both massage and chiro services at our new location in Prairie Grove.
Do stretching and exercises work well with chiro adjustments?
Exercise is an integral part of remaining healthy and strong. Chiropractors often recommend various therapeutic strengthening and stretching exercises to improve the health of your body and target your areas of need. These corrective exercises, if done consistently, will create a stronger more stable core which will help to keep your back aligned and will use bodily movements or postures to restore desirable changes in diseased or injured tissues.
How is massage different than chiropractic adjustments?
Massage targets the body’s soft tissue which is made up of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Our licensed massage therapists use varying techniques such as kneading, stroking, stretching, and compression to relax the soft tissue, improve circulation and reduce muscle tension and pain. A massage can be a very relaxing experience and helps to reduce stress. However, depending on the severity of your muscle spasms and preference of treatment, some discomfort can be felt while they work the knots out of your body. Consistent massages have a very beneficial impact on your body – stress tightens you up and massage and other techniques help to reduce that stress and eliminate long-term pain.
Chiropractic care focuses on the musculoskeletal system and corrects misalignments of the spine and joints to improve nerve conductivity, reduce pain, and increase range of motion.

What is spinal decompression?
Spinal Decompression is a nonsurgical, non-invasive treatment for alleviating the pain associated with herniated of degenerative discs. The patient lies down on the Accu-Spina decompression table and is harnessed onto it. The doctor then sets the machine to address your specific spinal issue and then the machine gently stretches the spin. The gentle stretching of the spine reduces the pressure on the discs and creates a negative pressure which helps the disc to retract the herniation or bulge back into the disc and reduces pressure on the nerves. In addition, nutrient rich fluids, oxygen, and water are better able to flow into the injured area, promoting healing. Treatments last 30 – 45 minutes and you may require several months of treatment to see results. Disc Centers of America, our partner, shows a success rate of 86% - 91% success rate for those who underwent treatment and avoided surgery.
Is chiropractic adjustment the same as spinal decompression?
A chiropractic adjustment is not the same as spinal decompression. It is one of many potential components of our diversified technique that uses an array of modalities to achieve quality care for our clientele.
Should I try chiropractic solutions before surgery?
In our opinion, if a patient can have positive results without surgery, one should try for the following reasons:
-
Non-invasive – it is a conservative approach that avoids the risks of surgery such as anesthesia, infection, and scarring.
-
Potential Pain Relief – it can improve joint mobility, and nerve conductivity which can alleviate pain, reduce headaches, and provide relief.
-
Improve Function – restoration of movement and flexibility in the spine and joints can allow an improvement in life and management of daily activities.
-
Identify underlying issues – Chiropractors may identify underlying pain causes and recommend therapies such as exercises or lifestyle changes that can impact and promote long-term healing.
-
Cost Effective – Surgery is expensive. Chiropractic care can also be covered by insurance and costs much less. For our patients, with no insurance – we offer affordable pricing and packages to make sure chiropractic care is in reach for everyone.
Chiropractic Techniques
Here are some of the chiropractic techniques we use at Prairie Grove Chiropractic and Massage. Your treatment plan may include some or all. Each care plan is based on a patient's unique needs.
What is the diversified technique?
The diversified technique is the most widely used chiropractic adjustment method world-wide. It involves specific quick and short thrusts at a precise angle, depth, and direction to targeted joints to correct misalignments and remove interruptions to the central nervous system. It can also involve using features of a specially designed chiropractic table, which the client lies on, or the positioning of blocks to then return the misaligned joint to its proper position. It is a safe and effective method of relieving pain and stiffness to the body.
What is spinal manipulation?
Spinal Manipulation is a technique that chiropractors use to realign the spinal column. They use their hands or a chiropractic device to apply a quick and targeted thrust to the joint to correct its positioning. This thrust applies force to the joint to move it more than it would on its’ own and to return it to an aligned position. Spinal manipulation is a safe and useful technique in treating low back pain, neck pain, headaches, and sciatica.
What is spinal alignment?
Spinal Alignment refers to the alignment or positioning of the head, shoulders, spine, hips, knees, and ankles align with one another. The spine plays a key role and supports the entire body. When all the joints are in their proper position, posture should be correct, and your body should function as designed. If your spine has joints that are out of position, the positioning and function of the rest of the body will be impaired. The misalignment can cause pain not only in your back but can affect knees, hips, neck, limit range of motion, and can cause headaches, fatigue, illness, and numbness and tingling in your appendages. Your quality of life can be affected negatively. Proper spinal alignment is essential to your body’s health and well-being.
What is an activator?
The activator method is a therapeutic intervention device used by Chiropractors. It is either a spring loaded or electronically powered hand-held tool that provides a quick, low forced impulse that is designed to move joints into their proper alignment. It is an extremely safe treatment and has the benefits of controlled force to a localized position. It does not require the bending or twisting of the body to reposition the joint and its high-speed delivery method allows for quick targeting of the affected area.
What is the Thompson Drop-Table Technique?
This chiropractic technique also uses high velocity, low amplitude thrusts, but combines them with a “drop table.” Its goal is to prevent over adjustment. While the doctor still uses force to manipulate the spine, the force is reduced as part of the table is designed to drop away as the adjustment is occurring. This allows for a gentler, very controlled adjustment, which utilizes gravity to realign the spine.
What is the Gonstead Adjustment?
The Gonstead process of adjustment involves the analysis of your spine using five specific criteria: visualization, instrumentation, static palpitation, motion palpitation, and x-ray analysis. The goal is to restore and maintain optimal health by identifying and correcting any misalignment of the spine to ensure there is no interference with the central nervous system. This technique can use equipment in the adjustment process including a Cervical Chair, Knee Chest Table, Pelvic Bench, and a Hy-Lo and or Slot Table.
What is the Flexion Distraction Technique?
The Flexion Distraction Technique is a gentle, safe, and controlled treatment designed to open and widen the spinal canal area reducing pressure on nerves and increasing motion to spinal joints. The patient lies face down on the specially designed table and the chiropractor moves the table in a rhythmical, smooth, slow, and specific manner to decompress, flex, and manipulate the spine.
What is cold laser therapy?
Cold Laser Therapy is a low intensity laser treatment that stimulated healing in the body with low levels of red and infrared light. It helps to ease pain, reduce swelling, and impact injury size. This hand-held device beams the light energy at your skin and affected area to promote healing.
Looking for new patient information?
If you have any questions, please call or contact us.
What should I expect during the initial consultation?
All new patients will need to fill out intake paperwork and will receive a consultation and examination by our experienced chiropractor. We will assess your medical history, discuss your concerns and symptomatology, and identify your goals. Diagnostic x-rays and a foot scan are a part of our initial examination to identify and rule out any pathology which could be causing your problems. A full musculoskeletal examination will also help our chiropractor understand your physiology and establish a treatment plan for your condition. Once it is determined that chiropractic treatments are appropriate for you, only then will you receive your first adjustment.
